Sholay a.k.a Flames of the Sun a.k.a Embers a.k.a Flames
United Producers, Sippy Films, Sholay Media & Entertainment, India, 1975.
Sholay title
Retired police inspector Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar) needs help from two thieves Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jai (Amitabh Bachchan). Two years ago Thakur arrested them and found out that they were brave men. As bandits attacked the train Thakur freed the duo so that the train could be saved. Now Thakur sends jailer (Vikas Anand) to find Veeru and Jai.

Meanwhile the rogues are having fun with their stolen sidecar motorcycle. Then they go meet greedy lumber mill owner Soorma Bhopali (Jagdeep). There is a 2000 rupee reward on them so they need Soorma to get them arrested and collect the reward money that they will share when they get out of jail. The new Jailor (Asrani) is a little Hitler (the character was a tribute to Chaplin's "The Great Dictator") whose informer Hariram (Keshto Mukherjee) the boys must fool to escape.

Thakur wants to hire the boys to catch notorious bandit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan). Veeru and Jai travel with chatty cart driver Basanti (Hema Malini) to Thakur's mansion. After "job interview" (i.e. fighting Thakur's men) and attempt to rob Thakur's safe the boys meet Radha (Jaya Bhaduri), Thakur's widowed daughter-in-law. Veeru becomes attracted to Basanti and Jai to Radha.

Thakur tells his story. Gabbar swore revenge when Thakur arrested him. Gabbar escaped prison and murdered Thakur's family. He also tortured Thakur and cut off his arms. After hearing the story Veery and Jai decide to defend the village for free. But sacrifices must be made...

"Sholay" is one of the best loved movies in India. When published in 1975 it ran for more than five years at Mumbai's movie theatres. In 1999 it was declared "Film of the Millennium" by BBC India. Many Indians know quotes from the movie. There are also numerous horses in India named after Basanti's horse Dhanno.

Sholay was heavily inspired by Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns and Kurosawa's samurai films. In the mix are thrown Indian traditions and some slight critique against strict rules about social norms (Veeru with criminal past is not given acceptance to marry Basanti before he threatens to kill himself). Also the film suggests a liberal view of remarriage of widows. In the India of the 1970s Basanti as a self-employed cart driver was also surprisingly strong and career-oriented female character.

The curry western is much like spaghetti westerns but with more comedy, romance and Bollywood musical numbers, having something for everybody. Especially the dramatic scene where Thakur returns home and finds his family murdered is much like the corresponding scene in "Once upon a time in the West." Amjad Khan's sadistic villain is like Indian version of Gian Maria Volontè's villains. Also the length is on par with Leone's epics as the director's cut is 204 minutes (there are two DVD editions of this film, the original aspect ratio is 4:3 but there is a shorter wide-screen cut running 198 minutes). The story culminates in epic duel between Thakur and Gabbar that is slightly different in the cut version. The main actors were all legendary Bollywood stars or future legends. The characters are all given their story arcs, making them interesting. The dialogue is great although some jokes must have been lost in translation. Also the songs were untranslated.
Cover of Sholay director's cut DVD
This is essential piece of As an Indian cinema and also must see for fans of Western movies and Asian movies.

The Monuments Men
Columbia Pictures, Fox 2000 Pictures, Smokehouse Pictures, Obelisk Productions, Studio Babelsberg, USA, Germany, 2014.
The Monuments Men title
March 1943. The Nazis are stealing art from all over Europe to be exhibited in Führer Museum. In Paris Secretary Claire Simone (Cate Blanchett) working for SS Officer Viktor Stahl (Justus von Dohnányi) secretly provides the French Resistance with information about the stolen paintings.

Professor Frank Stokes (George Clooney) struggles to save the cultural heritage. Group of art scholars are recruited to form a special group The Monuments Men. Stokes and Donald Jeffries (Hugh Bonneville) recruit James Granger (Matt Damon), architect Richard Campbell (Bill Murray), sculptor Walter Garfield (John Goodman), Jean Claude Clermont (Jean Dujardin) and Preston Savitz (Bob Balaban). Also German-born Sam Epstein (Dimitri Leonidas) joins the group. Their mission is to retrieve stolen art and mark historically important buildings so that they will not be bombed by the Allied Forces.

Monuments Men briefing
Nazi art stash
In July 1944 the group arrives in Normandy. Stokes finds a truckload of stolen art. Granger travels to Paris alone as a secret agent. He meets Claire who is in jail for collaborating with the Germans. Granger tries to track down the rightful owners with help from Claire. However the Russians are nearing and also stealing art. When Jeffries gets killed while trying to save Michelangelo's Madonna sculpture, Stokes feels obliged to retrieve it. Then Hitler gives Nero Decree to destroy all art if Germany loses the war.

The story is loosely based on true events and shows a less known aspect of the World War II. The films tries to mimic the style of classic lightweight war adventures and it never gets very violent. The film feels poorly structured as the story makes jumps without explanations and splits the group just as the action should begin. The various characters suffer from poor characterization and the story never picks up or gets very exciting. The good actors feel underused. Of course George Clooney is the solemn leader, Bill Murray brings some comedy and emotional depth and John Goodman plays similar jovial character as always, but rest of the cast goes mainly unnoticed. However the film makes an important point about preserving cultural treasures and honours the men who fought to save them. A message that is again topical at the time when Daesh and Taliban terrorists are destroying ancient statues and temples in the Middle East, destroying also the legacy of their own ancestors.

Decoy (1995)
F.Y.D.O.E. Films, Floyd Group, Minds Eye Entertainment, Canada, USA, 1995.
Decoy title
Baxter (Peter Weller) and Travis (Robert Patrick) are two tough agents/assassins/mercenaries whatever. Travis is traumatized after being tortured and spends his days in his cabin popping painkillers and drinking booze. Well, unpredictable Baxter is not playing with a full deck either. He lives as a hermit, trading currencies and mixing Samurai ethos with Native American mythology.

Scientists have developed a revolutionary thinking computer chip (Skynet I guess). Rich businessman Wellington (Peter Breck) is auctioning it. Hitwoman Katya (Charlotte Lewis) kills Wellington's guards and delivers message from his former hireling Jenner (Scott Hylands). Jenner accuses Wellington of ripping him off and demands $50,000,000 for the chip. Wellington wants to hire Travis to protect his daughter Diana (Darlene Vogel). Travis agrees but wants Baxter for back-up.

Baxter, Travis and Diana go to secret forest cabin. Mole reveals their location to Jenner's men. Katya, Gunther (Zoltan Buday), Daniel (Vladimir Kulich) and the disposable thugs pay surprise visit. Therefore Baxter the Samurai makes some sliced meat. The trio gets enough of camping and continues their voyage with relaxing bus trip. However some trigger-happy thugs cause nuisance and Travis boils over. Travis standing on the hood of the bus shooting and yelling looks epic in B-movie way.

Gunther, Katya and Daniel
Epic.
The trio hides in an old Indian graveyard. The plot gets more complicated as Baxter realises that Diana is not Wellington's real daughter but a ... Decoy!

Direct-to-video 1990s action with some extra fun resulting from illogicalities. The dialogue between Weller and Patrick is quite fun. The bad guys have some cool wrist-worn blade launchers and Katya has a scifiesque gun. Most of the action occurs in Canadian forest that looks similar to Finnish forests. The story has some interesting twists but doesn't rise above average action films.

Triple Review: Bad Ass Trilogy

Let's check the three "Bad Ass"-movies starring Danny Trejo.

Bad Ass
Amber Lamps, Silver Nitrate, USA, 2012.

Senior citizen Frank Vega (Danny Trejo) beats up two skinheads (John Dixon and Kevin Patrick Burke) harassing a black man in a bus and becomes a hero in Internet. After spending his youth in Vietnam and being shunned by society, Frank notices that he is now a small celebrity. As he gets into other situations where he has to beat up criminals, Officer Malark (Patrick Fabian) wants Frank to cool off a bit.

Mayor Williams (Ron Perlman) starts an anticrime campaign but is secretly doing business with criminals. Frank's best friend Klondike (Harrison Page) is murdered. Frustrated with the inefficient cops, Frank decides to solve the crime himself beating up bad guys to get information. Corrupt Mayor and crime lord Panther (Charles S. Dutton) have no interest seeing the murder solved. In addition to crime-fighting, Frank gets to know foul-mouthed boy Martin (John Duffy) living next door and his hot mother Amber Lamps (Joyful Drake).

Joyful Drake

This almost spoofs the old man action genre but is also close to Charles Bronson's movies. The beginning of story is loosely inspired by bus fight which was filmed and became a viral video on YouTube. The story starts light and Frank's background story is kind of touching, but the story gets more violent as it proceeds to the vigilante territory. Danny Trejo's gruffly charisma carries the film well as he plays a tough but nice guy. However Ron Perlman is underused and he and Perlman do not even have scenes together.
Hang on!
The story has good amount of comedy with running jokes about Frank's inability to understand social media and computer technology. The joke is visited in "Bad Ass 2" when Frank has finally learned to use Internet. Just like Machete, also Frank knows how to charm ladies. As a nod to cheap direct-to-video movies loaning footage from other films, "Bad Ass" loans the bus chase from "Red Heat."

Rating: Good

Bad Ass 2: Bad Asses
Sense and Sensibility Ventures, Silver Nitrate, USA, 2014.

3 years after the events of the first movie Bad Ass Frank (Danny Trejo) is coaching young boxers. Manny Parkes (Jeremy Ray Valdez) is the most talented of his students. Manny gets involved in drug business and is soon found murdered. In the funeral Frank meets Manny's mother Rosaria (Jacqueline Obradors) and promises to find the killers.

Frank destroys a drug lab and for some reason the thugs do not like it. Grumpy and agoraphobic shopkeeper Bernie Pope (Danny Glover) saves Frank's life. The Bad Asses decide to find Manny's killer Adolfo (Ignacio Serricchio) despite Officer Malark's warnings. First they crash a Freshman Party where they show that they can drink and charm young women. The clues lead to trails of powerful enemies and soon also Rosaria and her daughter (Melany Ochoa) are in danger.
Patrick Fabian
Officer Malark
"Bad Asses" is just as entertaining as the prequel, not changing the formula drastically but adding the buddy comedy aspect. If "Bad Ass" took inspiration from Charles Bronson movies, this has elements from "Lethal Weapon 2." The effective hip-hop and Mexican songs of the first part were changed to more generic sounding hip-hop music.

Also in this part some footage is loaned, now from "Narrow Margin." The dialogue of Danny & Danny is entertaining with the two old guys trading good-natured insults. Of the three movies this was funniest to watch. However issue of Bernie's agoraphobia is quickly forgotten, which makes to think why it was included in the first place. The ending is absurd, but fitting to the tongue-in-cheek nature.

Rating: Good

Bad Ass 3: Bad Asses on the Bayou
Sense and Sensibility Ventures, Silver Nitrate, Ginobli, USA, 2015.

Bad Asses Frank (Danny Trejo) and Bernie (Danny Glover) need money for Bernie's liver operation. Preventing a bank robbery makes them celebrities again but does not solve their money problems. Frank is missing her girlfriend Rosaria from the previous film who has moved to Florida. Cop friend Carmen Morgan (Loni Love, who had a small part in "Bad Ass 2") invites Bad Asses to her wedding in Louisiana. By the way Officer Malark is not in this movie. Bad Asses have to leave their familiar territory Los Angeles.
Loni Love
Carmen
Danny Trejo and Danny Glover
Bad Asses
Carmen is marrying Geoffrey (Sammi Rotibi) who is wheelchair-bound. Wedding party in Morgan-mansion takes a surprising turn when Carmen is kidnapped. Redneck crime gang demands ransom but the Bad Asses do not tolerate such a thing. It is time to visit thrift store for patrol clothes and start punching bad guys in the face.
Redneck crime gang
Carmen's little brother Ronald (Jimmy Bennett) is bullied at school and the Bad Asses help him. His father Earl (John Amos) is pacifist and wants to solve problems with diplomacy. As the police Chief Broussard (Davi Jay) is corrupt, Earl must also become a Bad Ass! Earl's transition from pacifist to vigilante takes much less time than Paul Kersey's.
John Amos
Earl
This is not the strongest part of the trilogy as the joke is getting old. The change of scenery works better than expected but the comedy feels weaker than in the previous part and the redneck setting could have been explored more. Much of the face punching is now replaced with gun fight action. This time footage from the movie Air America (1990) is used. It seems a rule of the series that new Bad Asses are recruited in every movie, and the conclusion suggests "Avengers" style group being formed. The ending promises the next in the series to be titled "Bad Asses in Bangcock" (sic).

The movies of the trilogy are fun and simple entertainment with old guys beating much younger guys and charming women young enough to be their granddaughters. The movies surely are quite generic direct-to-video style action comedy but elevated by the good main characters, both Dannys seem to have had fun making the movies.

"The Magic of Belle Isle" is a feel-good drama comedy with some eccentric characters. The story is quite traditional and predictable but so what as the story is warmly told. Basically the movie feels like well made TV-movie. Morgan Freeman's wryly humouristic remarks bring smile on the face. Virginia Madsen is likable in her role. Also the kid trio acted well and it is nice to see that they have gotten more roles afterwards.

In the Realm of the Senses (Ai no korîda) a.k.a Empire of the Senses a.k.a The Realm of the Senses a.k.a L'empire des sens
Argos Films, Oshima Productions, Shibata Organisation, Japan, 1976.
In the Realm of the Senses titles
This film is absolutely not for kids! The story is based on an incident in 1930s Japan. Sada Abe (Eiko Matsuda) works as a maid in Kichizo Ishida's (Tatsuya Fuji) hotel. Sada is a former prostitute and she is harassed by old pervert (Taiji Tonoyama) until she agrees to have sex with him but cold weather plays its tricks on the old man.

Kichizo Ishida
Insatiable Kichizo seduces nymphomaniac Sada. Secretly from Kichizo's wife Toku (Aoi Nakajima) they start a series of sexual experimentations in a hotel. The experimentations go more extreme with exhibitionism and sadomasochism. They gain notoriety in the hotel and the geisha's servicing them begin to shun them. Their obsession gets deeper and more self-destructive.

The movie shocked the audiences with explicit sex scenes and violent conclusion. It was groundbreaking despite not being the first mainstream movie containing pornographic scenes. Now similarly themed movies are again on the spotlight with the exploits of art house directors such as Lars Von Trier and Gaspar Noe. Even today the scenes are very explicit and disturbing and more than general audiences can handle. Ôshima's direction guarantees stylishly made period drama about destructive obsession but storywise the film is quite thin and offers little besides depictions of sex acts, I got a little bored. Of Ôshima films I have seen, I would rate "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" and "Gohatto" higher.

Love and Other Troubles (Hulluna Saraan)
Bronson Club, Nordisk Film, Finland, 2012.
Love and Other Troubles (Hulluna Saraan) title
Ville Hietalahti (Jussi Nikkilä) is shy and reserved son of aging rock star Taisto Hietalahti (Ville Virtanen). Former child star Ville works as a music teacher and one day he briefly meets an American Country Dance- instructor Sara ("Lost" -star Emilie de Ravin). Ville's bohemian father moves to him because doctor has ordered him to take it easy.

Taisto wants to go to a karaoke bar and drags Ville along with him. Also Sara comes to the same bar. When Ville chickens out, it is the daddy who picks up the girl. Both men fall in love with Sara. To complicate things Taisto is chased by Leena (Tiina Lymi) who is an eager fan of Taisto.
In the bar
In his childhood Ville was alone a lot, while Taisto was touring and now they are trying to fix their relationship. Ville tries to grow out of Taisto's shadow. Also Ronald Reagan's ghost (voiced by Tommi Korpela) has an important role in the story.

The main actors deliver the comedy with dead pan style. The movie's humour is very Scandinavian style. Jussi Nikkilä's acting style is very low-key compared to Ville Virtanen's hearty rock star. The story has some good moments and nice cinematography. Director Samuli Vauramo's style has been compared to Wes Anderson. However for me the combination of drama and comedy did not quite work as it falls flat and could have been funnier.

The movie is located in a fictional small town in Finland but the movie was filmed in Turku. The movie avoids showing the usual landmarks of Turku, but some streets and residental areas can be identified.
I know where this place is!

Romance starts slowly
"La délicatesse" is a piquant French romantic drama with subtle humour and with a dash of quirky surrealism. In addition of getting over a loss of loved one, it is also tale of two emotionally reserved people slowly getting to know each other. Audrey Tautou is charming as always and Markus performed by François Damiens is clumsy but kind. Also the emotional soundtrack fits the mood of the movie. To Scandinavian taste this low key romance works better than most flashy Hollywood counterparts.

Asymmetrical Productions, Canal+, Channel Four Films, CiBy 2000, Les Films Alain Sarde, StudioCanal, The Picture Factory, The Straight Story Inc., Walt Disney Pictures,  France, UK, USA, 1999.
The Straight Story title
The movie is based on the true story of Alvin Straight's 1994 journey across Iowa and Wisconsin. Alvin Straight's (Richard Farnsworth) friend Bud (Joseph A. Carpenter) and neighbour Dorothy (Jane Galloway Heitz) find him lying on the kitchen floor. Bud and Alvin's slow daughter Rose (Sissy Spacek) take him to see the doctor. Doctor says that he should start using a walker.

Alvin and Rose
Alvin's brother Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton) suffers a stroke. Once the brothers were close but they are estranged now. Alvin wants to visit Lyle but he is unable to drive a car. He attaches a trailer to his lawn mover, loads it with sausages and gasoline and sets on the road. First attempt fails as several hundred mile trip is too much for the ancient lawn mower so he must return and buy a newer one from tractor dealer Tom (Everett McGill). On the road he meets young hitchhiker girl (Anastasia Webb), group of bicyclists, deer woman (Barbara E. Robertson) and many more. During the trip Alvin thinks back his past life and mistakes sometimes giving life advice to younger folks.
Alvin begins his journey
This is a different kind of film in David Lynch's resume. No weird hallucinations or twisted psychos but calm and warm-hearted road trip across beautiful American countryside. Still Lynch includes just enough weirdness to make it identifiable as a Lynch movie. Beneath the surface of simple looking story are hidden deep thoughts about life and getting old. On the background plays Angelo Badalamenti's gentle folk music. It is tragic to learn Richard Farnsworth had bone cancer during the shooting of the film and committed suicide year later.

Appearance of mother puts further strain on Rey's and Leo's relationship as Antonia thinks that Leo is not good enough for her son. They have also a writer friend Lola (Mariola Fuentes) who writes a novel based on Leo and Rey.

This crime comedy is bit like films of Pedro Almodovar. It seems that all of the film's main gay characters have mother issues. It offers some laughs here and there with a decent thriller plot. Pablo Puyol is a good "American Psycho" style killer and Pepón Nieto and Carlos Fuentes are a sympathetic pair. However many of the jokes feel like inside jokes about Spanish (gay?) culture and politics and the gruesome crime plot darkens the overall light mood a bit too much.

You will never watch "X-Men" the same way again.

The Hypnotist title
Based on Lars Kepler's novel "Hypnotisören".

Finnish-born Detective Joona Linna (Tobias Zilliacus) gets the case of murdered physical education teacher Anders Ek. Soon also other members of the Ek family are found murdered. Only injured son Josef (Jonatan Bökman) is found at the crime scene. Doctor Daniella (Helena Af Sandeberg) suggests calling retired hypnotist Erik Bank (Mikael Persbrandt) to get information from Josef. Erik was discredited after hypnotism research project went wrong. There is also a surviving daughter Evelyn Ek (Emma Mehoniç) who is adopted elsewhere and Joona struggles to find her before the killer.

Something to be envious of Swedish is that they have managed to find the formula for gripping mystery/crime movies. For Lasse Hallström this is atypically gritty movie as his films are usually warmhearted drama ("What's Eating Gilbert Grape", "The Cider House Rules") or romantic films ("Chocolat", "Dear John"). In the Scandinavian thriller style almost all the characters have family troubles or personal traumas. Bleak images of wintry Sweden adds to the depressive atmosphere. But then it starts to go wrong. The movie changes and omits too much of the book barely scratching the surface of the original story. Possibly it would have worked better as a TV series.

It also seems that Lasse Hallström is outside his comfort area as the drama is messy and the crime story loses its momentum for a long time before quickly tying up necessary amount of loose ends. It leaves too many questions unanswered making our Finnish "Vares" films seem totally coherent. The actors seem uninspired and they sleepwalk through the story. In the end not much is learned about the lives of the characters. And what was the totally pointless date scene with Joona and Daniella? The book was much better and I recommend watching the film first (if you must) and then reading the book to fill the missing parts.

Later Wah apologises and there is romantic sparking between the two. Meanwhile Fly and his friend Ah-Site (Ronald Wong) get indebted to billiard parlor thug (Chi Fai Chan) and they get badly beaten up. Wah goes to seek revenge. Ngor returns home but invites Wah to visit sometime.

Ah-Site gets married and leaves behind the gangster life. Later gangster named Tony (Alex Man) comes to demand debts from Fly. Wah tries to solve the debt problem by robbing Tony's boss (!). Local godfather Uncle Kwan (Ching Wai) must intervene and order Tony, Wah and Fly to cool-off. Kwan also orders that one of the three must kill snitch Big-Mouth Kay (Tat-Wah Gan) before trial. As Fly is too reckless, he gets a job selling street food but he messes even that up.

Wah goes to Lantau Island to meet Ngor and almost leaves his gangster life to stay with her. Fly gets into trouble with Tony and Wah's loyalty towards him forces him to return to Hong Kong. Fly wants to do something that would make him respected in the Triad-society although Wah warns that there is no honour in mob life.
Fly wants respect
Wong Kar-wai started his directing career with stylish gangster drama. It is not John Woo- style bullet ballet but more realistic crime film, kind of remake of Scorcese's "Mean Streets." It is a tragic tale of a gangster who wants to leave the crime business but is constantly getting dragged back by his reckless friend. Stylistically it looks more hazy than other HK crime flicks of the era with jerky slow-motion (that he used also in "Ashes of Time") and cold neon lights creating the urban atmosphere. In contrast the scenes in Lantau island use warm natural light. Before this Kar-Wai wrote scripts to mainly forgotten flicks, and his skills as director are not yet fully refined but already show hints of his trademark style especially in the scenes with Lau and Cheung. The crime story itself is quite straightforward and follows the genre traditions of friendship, revenge, duty and honour. The theme of unrequited love is explored further in almost all later Wong Kar-wai films. Soundtrack has good 1980s HK-pop including Cantonese version of "Take My Breath Away" by Sandy Lam Yik Lin.

The Man Who Laughs
Universal Pictures, USA, 1928.
The Man Who Laughs title
Based on novel "The Man Who Laughs" by Victor Hugo.

In the 17th Century England rebellious Lord Clancharlie (Conrad Veidt) refuses to kiss King James II's (Sam De Grasse) hand. Barkilphedro the Jester (Brandon Hurst) suggests selling the son Gwynplaine to Comprachicos surgeons who carve a permanent grin on his face. Then Clancharlie is executed with the Iron Lady.

The boy (Julius Molnar) stranded from the ship of exiled gypsies wanders through nightmarish landscape of hanged corpses. He finds an orphaned and blind baby girl. Philosopher Ursus (Cesare Gravina) gives shelter to them. Ursus has also a tame wolf named Homo. Years go by and Gwynplaine (Conrad Veidt) becomes a famous entertainer and clown. Dea (Mary Philbin, who also appeared in "The Phantom of the Opera") grows up to be a beautiful girl. Gwynplaine and Dea are in love but Gwynlaine is afraid. Would Dea still want to marry him if she could see his grotesque face?

"The Man Who Laughs" is a silent film with orchestral score, some songs and even some shouts. Being a late era silent movie, the camera work quality is the highest level of the era. Camera moves freely and the style looks like German silent Expressionist movies. The invention of sound cinema was actually step backwards in cinematography as the sound equipment made the camera stationary again. The light and dark are used well.
Mary Philbin and Cesare Gravina
Dea and Ursus
Ship with creepy lighting
Although it was a success when released, it hasn't gained similar reputation as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" or "The Phantom of the Opera" or Universal's monster films. One reason may be that the original novel is not one of Victor Hugo's best known. Sadly the movie almost faded into obscurity but seems to have surfaced again in the recent years. The movie has a surprising legacy: Bill Finger, Jerry Robinson and Bob Kane created Batman's archenemy The Joker based on the looks of Gwynplaine. Frankly, I would probably not know about this film if I hadn't seen the poster somewhere in the Internet. But as Gwynplaine is the sympathetic hero of the story, maybe The Joker inherited his evil character from Barkilphedro. Also Universal's monster movies seem to have been influenced by this film, the final scenes have a bit similar mood as in "Frankenstein" (1931). With sideshow theme it also has a link to "Freaks."

Except for the gloomy beginning Paul Leni's movie is not horror but romantic drama with palace intrigue and adventure. The story is not without some humour either. Conrad Veidt's acting is excellent with his eyes showing the pain of a man who is condemned to smile forever. All the performances are good. Mary Philbin's character is sweet and Olga Baclanova's party girl is fun to watch.

Paul Leni's career as film director was short, he died in 1929. Although he was a talent on par with F.W. Murnau and Fritz Lang, most of his films are unknown to audiences except most hardcore silent film enthusiasts. In fact all of Paul Leni's films are quite difficult to find on DVD. "The Man Who Laughs" is probably the easiest to get, this DVD was published by Spanish Tribanda Pictures with English captions. There is also French DVD by Films sans Frontières and American Region 1 DVD by Kino Video.

Engineering an Empire: Egypt
History Channel, KPI Productions, USA, 2006.
Engineering an Empire: Egypt title
In 3000 B.C. the yearly flooding of the Nile caused devastation and and famine. Still the flood also made farming possible as it brought nutritious soil. Capital city Memphis remained dry because of protecting walls built by engineers of Pharaoh Menes. His armies united Upper and Lower Egypt into great kingdom. Early Egyptians were expert dam builders although sometimes the dams would burst. The success of Memphis encouraged Pharaohs to build even bigger structures.
Peter Weller in Egypt
In 2667 B.C. Pharaoh Djoser started construction of the first stone pyramid. Chief architect was Imhotep and he was also high-priest and physician. (In popular culture he is known as "The Mummy.") As there was not experience about building huge stone constructs, much of the complex was built using trial and error. Later Pharaohs built bigger and better pyramids with smooth sides. Pharaoh Khufu perfected the art of pyramid building with the Great Pyramid at Giza.
Pyramid construction site
The Bent Pyramid of Pharaoh Snefru
Sesostris III went on conquering Nubia to exploit its gold mines. To secure the borders he built military fortresses comparable to medieval castles. However the fortresses were lost 200 years later and the empire weakened. Later Pharaohs would go on conquering neighbouring areas but the areas would change the owner many times.
Egyptian palace
One curious building project was the city of Amarna. In 1352 B.C. Amenhotep IV wanted to diminish the power of Amun's priests. He elevated god Aton's importance and renamed himself Akhenaten. He moved the capital from Thebe to Luxor. City of Amarna was one of the first planned cities in the world. However the Pharaoh was unpopular and after his death the city was quickly abandoned.
Akhenaten
Finally the Egyptian empire collapsed because of economic recession, weak leaders and foreign conquerors but the big stone buildings endured.

Although there must be hundreds of documentaries about Egypt, this has a slightly different point of view. The main focus of this documentary is in the huge engineering projects of the ancient Egypt. It is quite informative about the building techniques summing up also the evolution of pyramids. It also sums up the crucial moments in history of Egypt.  "Engineering an Empire" seems to be an interesting series but I have only this one part.

Actor Peter Weller, who has also master's degree in Roman and Renaissance Art, is the host of the show. He visits the historical places in Egypt and also enters Djoser's and Snefru's tomb crawling in the narrow corridors. In addition to experts telling the facts there are also some well produced dramatisations and computer animations.

This is an essential 1980s teen movie with awesome 1980s pop soundtrack. It is cool and cheesy 1980s fun with cool heroine and it has young Christian Slater in dress and Texan Lisa Simpson. Although the story has many cliches of teen movies (and plot holes) it has quite feminist tone and message about just treatment of youth. Billie Jean is a strong and independent female character. She is resourceful and stands up against sexual oppression and injustice. Billie Jean also takes shots at novelty industry and media that exploits current issues and contemporary cult figures (it kind of foreshadows "Natural Born Killers.") Also the story turns the tables on common tropes about trailer trash, with the trailer park kids being the good guys and demanding to be treated fairly. Despite the themes it never gets too gloomy and it has the 1980's feel-good atmosphere.

Here's Pat Benatar performing the theme song Invincible:

He almost drowns but remembers his childhood when volcanic eruption destroyed his village. He also promises to fix his unfinished businesses if he survives. After that he still has to walk through a lava field in freezing weather.

Gulli swims
How Gulli survived in the icy water baffles the officials. Scientific experiments show that Gulli has "seal fat" that insulates more than regular fat cells and also his enzymes use energy more efficiently. Modest Gulli is not interested in becoming famous, he only struggled to survive and wants to continue with normal life. He returns to his job as fisherman in another ship.

Baltasar Kormákur made this film based on true survival story about Guðlaugur 'Gulli' Friðþórsson. The style is realistic and simple without being overdramatic. The sailors are rugged and heavy drinkers. Similarly the nature of Iceland is harsh and unpredictable. The film is a tribute to Icelandic fishermen. The flashback sequences show the volcanic eruption's surreal aftermath as people dig up their houses buried under thick layer of ash. Ólafur Darri Ólafsson does a good role as an improbable survivor. On the minus side the bareboned and almost documentary style eats the interest in other characters as we do not know much about the other members of the crew.

The crime story itself is not very complicated but the movie feels aimless with the rambling plot. It tries to be buddy cop comedy, action film, satire about Hollywood and music industry, business comedy and what else. The best things come from following the side businesses of Gavilan and Calden. The best jokes are placed in the second half of the story. Josh Hartnett feels miscast but Harrison Ford is fun to watch. Still in the their common scenes they have good chemistry. One of Harrison's highlights is when he tries to negotiate real estate deals in the middle of car chase. Much of the humour is based on realization that everyone in Hollywood has several jobs and would like to be actor, singer or scriptwriter. Otherwise the story is routine buddy-cop stuff, easy to watch but not very memorable. Numerous rappers (Kurupt, André Benjamin and Master P) and other stars (Eric Idle, Frank Sinatra Jr. and Smokey Robinson) appear in cameo roles.

The music videos of Daft Punk record "Discovery" now form a continuous story. There is no dialogue but the songs fit well the mood of the story. It is unique film and the ultimate anime music video. The animation is beautiful and contains some visual puns. Daft Punk make cameo appearance as themselves.

The characters designed by Leiji Matsumoto look similar as in his other classic films such as "Arcadia of My Youth", "Galaxy Express 999" and "Space Battleship Yamato." Sadly those films are difficult or impossible to get on official DVDs. I once had opportunity to see two of those on the big screen, it was a Japanese movie week in Turku showcasing Japanese films and I became immediately a fan of Matsumoto. Leiji Matsumoto is one of anime artists whose style is immediately recognisable. His female characters are tall, slender and they have pretty 60s style eyes. There are also cool space heroes, comical looking little guys and spaceships with designs based on 19-20th century technology (ships in space, locomotives and in this one electric guitar). The members of Daft Punk are fans of Leiji Matsumoto's "Captain Harlock"-films so they wanted to make a anime musical with him. The story is good with emotional and tragic moments and it has the romantic touch of Leiji Matsumoto.

Here's a trailer for the film:

The Gods Must Be Crazy
CAT Films, Mimosa Films, Botswana, South Africa, 1980.
The Gods Must Be Crazy title
In Kalahari desert lives Bushman tribe, who are content people without notion of private property. Their living is carefree in contrast to busy people living in the city. One day Xi (N!xau) finds an empty Coca-Cola bottle thrown from an airplane. Maybe the gods gave them the bottle. The bottle is an useful tool and soon everyone wants to use it. It has a similar effect on the natives as the One Ring on the people of Middle Earth. As the bottle causes argument, Xi tries to get rid of it. It is more difficult than expected so Xi says he will travel to the Mount Doom end of the Earth to throw it away.

Meanwhile in Barani there is a violent coup attempt. President (Ken Gampu) sends army to kill coup leader Sam Boga (Louw Verwey). The army and terrorists have their little war in the banana plantation. Although the terrorists are deadly assassins, they are also comically inept. Finally the terrorists cross the border and escape to Botswana.

Kate Thompson (Sandra Prinsloo) is stressed with city life and she gets a calm job as teacher in a small village. Clumsy Scientist Andrew Steyn (Marius Weyers) drives to fetch her in his junk car. All kinds of funny events occur on the way. The car breaks and they are left in the middle of savanna. Xi meets them and thinks they are gods. He tries to give the bottle to them. Later Xi gets in trouble with law but Andrew and his mechanic Mpudi (Michael Thys) save him by offering Xi a job as an animal tracker and guide. The terrorist cause trouble and Xi, Andrew and Mpudi must save the kidnapped children.

This is a funny comedy about cultural differences. Both Xi and Andrew and his friends cause hilarity trying to understand each other's weird habits. Narrator (Paddy O'Byrne) entertainingly tells how Xi sees the modern culture. Partially the movie is a documentary about the Bushmen, giving a bit too idealized picture of the Bushman way of life. But also Kate and Andrew have their misunderstandings. "When I meet women, my brain switches off, I turn into a complete idiot" explains Andrew (I feel you bro). The story feels episodic with some hit-or-miss jokes but the story has charm and the local actors and extras bring authenticity. The farcical slapstick action is often sped-up making it look like a Benny Hill- skit. Even the semi-serious terrorist side-plot is amusing with them slipping on bananas or having trouble with their bazooka. Watched in the proper mood, this is fun and also a bit satirical story.

Ironically real life bushman N!Xau had no concept of money but became aware of money's worth and demanded roughly $50000 for the sequel. The official two films got also three unofficial sequels made in Hong Kong.
